Okay, people have asked me about my use of spelling like "coupla," "gotta," and "haveta" as well as my use of contractions like "'em" for "them".
This reflects at least three primary cultural influences.
- Homer J Simpson, a master of simplicity and of living in the moment; the latter being my fondest unfulfilled aspiration, or as Mr Simpson would say, "d'oh!"
- Jane Austen, a master of understatement, responsible for my description of Situations as Unfortunate, as well as my Recent Unwellness. The Unfortunate Aftermath of Jane Austen-related Cinema is my Temporary Tendency to speak in Really Bad Pseudo-Victorian Language.
- I'm from Jersey, which is to say, How YOU Doin'?
I agree; Jersey people often speak in pseudo-Austin-Vic/d'oh. I, too, am a "Jersey-an" in my past life; now transplanted to "Noo-Yawk". By the way, I did email you recently on your Xmas tree excersion. I spend much time on the computer now trying to set up my Website-in-progress. It leads to late-night comments such as this...
