People in Washington get increasingly dedicated to better public service, often via the Net.
In September 2009, the CDC launched a three-month text messaging pilot to get the word out regarding big health issues, like the H1N1 thing.
To subscribe to the pilot, text HEALTH to 87000. They tell me you can expect to receive about three health messages a week during the three-month pilot. (Standard text messaging rates will apply).
For more information about the pilot, visit http://www.cdc.gov/mobile

If it were used for TRUE emergencies (i.e Katrina, 9-11), then I'd be fine with the government sending messages without opting-in... But three messages a week is just PLAYTIME for the BORED...

I see you have to Opt-In for the service... which is a good thing in some ways, bad in other ways.
I think other governments are using text messaging to reach people about critical issues BY DEFAULT (perhaps with an Opt-OUT option). Here in our country, I think an Opt-In option is better for "three heath messages a week"!?!?!? NO WAY!

And it's ripe for abuse by propagandists... and alarmists...
Personally, I like about 50% of Americans, are OPPOSED to the H1N1 Vaccine.
Just my thoughts. :)
